My First Blog Post

About ME!

Hi there! My name is Stephanie Hilliard, but I go by Steph. I am a second year college student at Washington State University and I am majoring in Communications. I am a part of a sorority here on campus, Alpha Chi Omega. When I am not doing my schoolwork, doing things for the house is what typically takes up the rest of my time. The reason why I am starting this blog is to post the media content I am going to be creating for a course I am taking this semester, COM 210. I am excited to be taking this class and be recording it all in a blog, so then in the end I can look back and see all of the hard work I have put into this course throughout the semester. A little bit more about myself, some hobbies and interests I have revolve around health and wellness, as well as music. I love exercising, yoga, and eating right. I try to exercise every day because it always makes me feel good after. I am taking yoga this semester, which I am excited about because normally when I am up at school I do not have much time to do it, but now I will get the chance to twice a week! I also always try to eat healthy because when I am healthy I am happy ☺. The kind of music that I love is EDM (electric dance music). I love going to festivals with my friends, those are my favorite kinds of weekends. So there is a little bit about me, stay tuned for more!

This is the first post on my new blog. I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.

Reflection Post

My favorite project was our final premiere project. The reasoning behind that is because I think I learned the most through doing this project. I realized what is a quality film instead of just posting a video. I started off by doing my big and little reveal videos all edited together, with photos of my family in Alpha Chi Omega included. After turning in my draft though, I came to the realization that those videos were not high enough quality to be able to be put on YouTube without being fuzzy. Then, I decided to redo it by taking time lapses of myself writing out an explanation of why I am grateful that I have gotten to be a part of Alpha Chi Omega and putting voice memos behind it saying the words out loud and putting a song in the back. I feel like I learned a lot not only about video editing by doing this, but also life lessons. What matters is that you try your hardest and give a quality product. Even though it took a lot of extra work doing a whole new video and writing a whole new essay portion, I wanted to turn in my best work possible. I also learned a lot of skills while using adobe premiere, I feel like video editing skills will help me out a lot in other aspects of life as well. I am not exactly sure what I want to do with my future. I think I want to be a teacher, and if I am I think my video editing skills will definitely help me if I want to do cool video presentations for my class. I feel like there aren’t any other skills I could have learned, all the tutorials and each unit I truly felt taught me everything I needed to know about multimedia creation. I found the reading resources that were put on the com 210 WordPress page very helpful. Anytime I had issues with anything, I would just look at the course readings and the videos and my questions were answered. I also found the quizzes helpful because it made me take notes on the assigned readings then made me realize what I knew or didn’t know after getting the quiz results back. I really do feel like I learned so much about time management and work ethic through taking this course and I am extremely grateful for that. Thank you COM 210 for an awesome semester.

Premiere Final Project

For my premiere final project, I actually decided to change my topic after submitting my draft. For some reason, after uploading my draft to YouTube it was extremely blurry, even though in premiere it did not really seem like it. I realized the video footage probably was not high enough quality because of the way it was filmed for my big little reveals. So instead, I decided to tell them story of the impact being a part of Alpha Chi Omega has had on me. I thought this was fitting especially since this is our last project. I took time lapses of myself writing it out. Every other take I would write in purple and would switch it off with black to make it a little more fun. I wrote on lined paper on my white desk with a lamp shining down on the paper to make it look really bright. I really like the way my footage ended up turning out. I filmed it, which was kind of difficult while I was writing. It was a little harder too because I was using my left hand to film, but one of the readings told us to hold our filming arm in close to our chest with our elbows folded in, so that is what I did and it made it a little easier. As for the editing aspect of things, there are a lot of new skills I learned while putting together this video. I started off with putting all of my footage together in a folder on my desktop, which I then imported into my project. This made it easier to find everything and put it all together. When putting it all together, my photos would be super weirdly zoomed in and stuff. I would fix that by using the scale tool. Some of my videos were smaller than others so I would use scale for those too. Since I would have to make those ones larger, I then would use the tool unsharp mask and would drag it onto my videos. The unsharp tool was super helpful since you can customize it to the amount you need to. Then I added my voice memos that I took of myself saying aloud what my little notes said. I added the images of each note so that I could make them slightly longer than my voice memos. I also added the song Warm Thoughts by Flume, and made it quieter than my voice memos by using the tool audio gain. I am really proud of the outcome of this project and feel like I have come a long way with my creation abilities.

Premiere Project Draft

For my premiere project, I decided to make a video edit of when I received my big and when I received my little. My Greek family at WSU have become some of my very best friends and I am so lucky to have them, that is why I thought this would be a perfect topic for my last project. I started off by making a folder on my desktop called com 210 final project. Then, when I began my project, I imported that folder. Within the folder, it consisted of a video of both of my big little reveals, photos of my Greek family after each reveal, and photos of us doing fun things. I added the song “Warm Thoughts” by Flume as the background music by going under file then import, then I scrolled down to music and retrieved the file from my iTunes account. When I would put my photos and videos into the sequence, I would use the same method we learned about in our premiere tutorials. I would double click either a photo or a video, then it would show up in the left hand corner of the screen. Then, I would drag it down without audio to my time line. For photos, I would make sure they were only two seconds before dragging them down. I also used the text tool a lot to describe each video and photos and for the credits at the end. I would have to make the box around the font smaller because every time I would type something one letter of a word would take up the entire screen. I used it to show when I was getting my big, when I was getting my little, and to explain the photos of us spending quality time together. I am struggling to make the photos look clearer in my video edit, they are kind of blurry right now and I do not know how to fix that. I tried using scale and position because every time I would add a photo to the sequence, it would pop up super zoomed in for some reason. As I said before, I would use scale and position to center them and show the whole photo, but now after posting it to YouTube they look kind of weird and fuzzy. For my final draft, I will make sure this is not a problem.

For this project, I decided to create an interview type project. What inspired me to go with the interview route was the tutorial we did during the audition tutorials for class. The interview I did relates to my topic because I think it is important to showcase not only why I joined Alpha Chi Omega, but why other girls did too. I am living in the house for my second semester this year and my room mate is my best friend, Sidney. I decided to interview her because while there are similarities as to the reason why we both decided to join Alpha Chi Omega, there are differences as well. That is part of what I think is so empowering about our house. We are a diverse group of women, but we all come together because of our core values. All across the country, Alpha Chi Omega’s core values are academic interest, character, financial responsibility, leadership ability, and personal development. While we all may have our differences (as any large group of women will), we all come together because these values are extremely important to us all. We have been taught to embrace our differences and love each other unconditionally because we are all there for the same reason. How I collected elements and created them was by using the voice memo app on my phone. I first recorded me explaining that I was going to tell why I joined Alpha Chi Omega. Then, I recorded myself explaining my reasoning. I re-recorded myself explaining my reasoning for my final draft because the quality did not sound as good as I had wanted it to be. Next, I introduced Sidney and said that she was going to say why she joined Alpha Chi Omega. I also re-recorded myself saying this as well for the same reasoning. Lastly, I recorded myself explaining how we all joined the house for our different reasons, but it all comes down to the fact that we all value the same things and that is why it is so special. I re-recorded myself saying this for the final draft as well and made sure to make myself sound more clear than I felt I sounded the first time. In finishing up my final draft, I deleted the three audio recordings that I felt could have sounded better and replaced it with the new ones. Then, I made sure they were all the same volumes, so that it would flow better. Lastly, I then exported it as a new mp3 and uploaded my final draft to SoundCloud! I am proud of my final project and am very glad I have gotten to share my experiences in Greek Life to you all!

I created a new multitrack mixdown to edit it all together. Since each memo was on my desktop, I would drag them into track 1, then put them in the right order and edited out the unnecessary silences. I am glad I have gotten to share my experiences in Greek Life to you all!

My idea for this project is to share why I joined Alpha Chi Omega. I also interviewed my best friend and roommate, Sidney.

Logo Project Final

For this project, I decided to make a logo displaying Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy. Our philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. I thought it would be perfect to bring it to life for this project because October is domestic violence awareness month. I really love our philanthropy because domestic violence is a very large issue in our society today and it is something that does need attention brought to it. The design influence that inspired me was one of the illustrator tutorials we did last week. I liked the idea of having a circle involved because I feel it brings more attention to the main point I am trying to bring attention to in my logo. I also wanted to include the chapter name, Alpha Chi Omega, because that is the house that provides this philanthropy. The significance of the elements in my design are the words Domestic Violence Awareness, Alpha Chi Omega, and the color purple within everything because that is the color that represents domestic violence awareness. My design process began with me using the type tool on illustrator to write out Domestic Violence Awareness. The font I used for it was Ballpark Weiner, which I had gotten from doing the varsity lettering tutorial we did last week. I originally made the fill color a dark ash purple, but after revising my draft I made it an even darker purple because it is the words I wanted to stand out the most. Then, I used the elipse tool to create the first oval around it. I made the stroke a bright purple color. Next, I copied the oval and made three bigger ones out of it. I filled the second one with a light purple for the background, so it could be the background of two of the circles. On the second oval, I held down the type button, then clicked the type on a path tool to write Alpha Chi Omega. I wanted the Alpha Chi Omega part on the side and smaller because I did not want as much attention for that aspect of it. I struggled with this a little bit in placing it in the correct spot I wanted it in. I just kept clicking in different areas of the circle until I finally found where I wanted it to go. I originally used the brush script MT italic font, but then I realized that font made it kind of hard to read. I changed it to apple chancery and moved the words over a little so the purple oval wouldn’t make it hard to read. I made the stroke points larger on the middle circle, then smaller and smaller for the outer circle to kind of give it an ombre effect. I really enjoy using illustrator and am happy with the outcome of my logo.
